woyww- cogs anywhere

I do apologies for not getting around to visit woyww last week.  Time was spent catching up with family and friends who all came to farewell my father-in-law.  A big thank you for all the kind wishes.
It always catches me by surprise that life just keeps going on at a very rapid pace when at the same time it has stopped for someone else.

Not a lot on my desk apart from some cogs that I am trying to remove from an old toy.  I have another steampunk ATC to make in a couple of months so I am looking everywhere for cogs.  I mean everywhere .... old toys, ebay, cyber space and DH's shed.  You would think with 3 motorbikes there would be a cog in there somewhere but, he says "definitely not ... out you go."

On the left of the desk you can see a collection of "textile themed" ATC's from the paperarts swap.  All different and all so interesting.

Now to visit woywww and continue my search for cogs.  You can never have enough cogs.

  1. See what does that mean? I have another ATC to make in a couple of months? I know I shall like it as I love steam punk, but you papercrafters live in a different world! take care #79

  2. Am glad that the funeral went well and you met up with all the folk who mean a lot at times like that. It is odd when normality carries on afterwards..we musn't feel guilty for enjoying life.
I saw loadsa cogs on ebay and Amazon the other day - good luck with your hunt!!

  3. When a friend died last year, I felt the same way about time standing still. I was in a vacuum. I can only imagine how you feel. I know art helps heal the pain a bit, though. Have a great Easter and happy WOYWW from #6. Sorry, I have NO idea where to get cogs, since I don't internet shop.

  7. I know what you mean about life going on, you look at people in the shops and think: can't you see someone in my life is gone and my world is upside down and yet they rush round you oblivious and you some how keep going too. I too am always on the look out for cogs, the only thing is that they are all made out of plastic now which needs some inking before they look like anything.

  9. I tried making some die cut and embossed cogs recently. I was really pleased with how they turned out - they looked like rusty, aged old metal, but were made from card - fab!

    happy woyww

  10. I've seen cog punches and die cuts so I'm sure you could do them up to look like metal. And I did note the collection of ATCs to the side of your desk. I felt the stirrings of creativity deep down inside me somewhere... ooh! I do have some ATCs to make. I have no idea the theme, but I'm getting excited by the though. And for me... last Wednesday was MONTHS ago.

  12. Cogs...I get mine at Hobby Lobby, a store in the US, so I don't know if you can get them online or what but the paper ones the others have made sound like they might work nicely.

  14. Hmm, cogs...I'm married to a JOiner with a vast workshop full of machines and no cogs...they're nuts and washers!! (And..out you go..a phrase I too have heard...or felt..an hand on my back in gentle persuasion!!) I've got an embossing folder of cogs for backgrounds - how long have you got, I could post you a few pages...?

  15. I didn't manage to get around to may blogs last week Sandra. Sorry to hear about your father-in-law. Please accept my condolences.

No need to wear your WOYWW badge when we catch up, I'm sure I will remember what you look like...come to think of it...how do I get one of those badges? Do I have to email Julia?

    Looking forward to next week.

  16. Sandra, I know what you mean about cogs and gears. I have made my own. It's a bit of trouble, but well worth it! You can see my tutorial here:

    http://shoshiplatypus.blogspot.co.uk/2011/09/friendly-plastic-embellishments-and.html

You will find a link in that post about how to make the moulds, and my Youtube video on the subject. Once you've made your moulds you can make as many gears as you want, ad infinitum! Search over!!

I have also made them with shrink plastic, cutting the shapes on my cutting machine (although you could easily print a template and cut them out by hand as they are quite big before shrinking) - I have made free images to download on my Skydrive (go to my blog and click on the link in my sidebar) - images in both svg format (for cutting machines) and png format for printing out. Look for the folder named "Shoshi's cut files" and find "Clocks and Gears." My Shrink Plastic post is here:

    http://shoshiplatypus.blogspot.co.uk/2011/10/shrink-plastic-gear-wheels.html

If you also look on my blog for all entries on "Rust" you will find some other techniques for grunging these up. Also the Steampunk Clock Face which was fun to do!

This may seem like more trouble than finding and using "real" gear wheels, but it is So Much Fun. I really, really enjoyed myself making them, and had the added satisfaction of having done them myself, and getting the effect I wanted. If you don't want a rusty effect, you can use gold, copper or silver rub n' buff to colour your gear wheels according to what you want. I did a bit of this on my Steampunk Mirror project.

    Have fun!!!

    Happy belated WOYWW,
    Shoshi

  20. I caught my breath the other day remembering how long ago we lost our Sarah.

Time does indeed do strange things,

basic grey did cogs in their robot range you can get them on line...then cast them, then make them in UTEE and make them look metal,

or you can visit a junk shop...

then you will come home and find them lying about all over the place...

  22. I have just been watching your video from last week. What a talented man your father-in-law was, and I am sure he will be greatly missed. I hope you manage to get all the cogs you want and need for your project. Thank you for your visit this week, and at least technology is allowing me to leave comments this week. Have a peaceful Easter. xx Maggie #9

  24. You're welcome, Sandra - glad I could help. If you do decide to make your own gear wheels, I guarantee you'll have some fun!!

Thanks for your comment on my blog. I am getting desperate over my blog now, as I can't sort it out, and get my new background picture to be big enough, no matter what I do. So it will have to stay looking horrible for a while longer till I can find out how to sort it out.
